‘Hello,’ squeaked the dragon. ‘What are you doing on my lumpy bumpy tail?’
Alice gulped. ‘I'm sorry, she said, ‘we were only playing.’
Then, feeling a little braver, Alice asked ‘Who are you?’
‘I'm Desmond - who are you?’
|
‘My name is Alice Southwark and these are my friends Matthew and Katie.’
‘How lovely to meet you,’
said Desmond in a very
squeaky voice.
Then he burst into tears.

Alice stared in amazement as the tiny mouse opened its tiny mouth and
let out an almighty ROOAAARRR.
Desmond was hopping from one foot to the other in excitement.
‘THAT'S MY ROAR!’
The mouse began to cry. ‘I'm sorry Desmond,’ he sniffled. ‘I stole your
roar while you were asleep.
I wanted to be big and fierce - but I've scared all my friends away. I
wish I had my squeak back.’
|
Alice thought hard. ‘Let's try something,’ she said to the mouse. ‘When I
say “GO”, you roar as loudly as you can, while Desmond squeaks as loudly
as he can.’
‘READY . . . STEADY . . . GO!’

‘I'd forgotten how loud it was!’ bellowed the King.
‘PARDON?’
yelled the Queen.
|
Desmond landed beside them at the top of the tallest tower.
When the King and Queen heard about Desmond's adventures they were very impressed.
‘How clever you are Alice,’ said the King.
‘How marvellous,’ said the Queen.
‘QUACK QUACK
READ ALL ABOUT IT!’
‘It's the Delivery Duck from The Dizzywibble Daily News,’ said Desmond. A
newspaper whizzed past his head and landed with a thud at the King's feet.
‘Good,’ said the King, ‘I can check the croquet results.’
